Construction Begins on South Korean Wind Farm

UNISON Industrial Co. Ltd. (Seoul, Korea) announced that construction has started on the first commercial wind farm in South Korea. Gangwon Wind Power will install 49 turbines within two years, for total capacity of 98MW. Gangwon is a joint venture established last year by Unison Industrial and Lahmeyer International, a German firm that builds wind farms.

The 2MW turbines will require an investment of 145 billion that will be financed by Unison, Gangwon, Pyeongchang County and Lahmeyer. The project is expected to stimulate private construction of wind farms in other regions. The site on Daegwalleyeong hills has average wind speeds of more than 6m/s, and the facility will have a capacity that is 13 times larger than total wind generation facilities currently in Korea.
