Vicor Sues Tyco Over Patent Infringement for Power Converter

Vicor Corp. has filed a suit in U.S. District Court in Massachusetts, alleging that Lucent Technologies Inc. and Tyco Electronics have infringed on a patent involving technology for a dc-dc power converter.

According to the filing, Lucent first developed technology that infringed on the patent, then sold its manufacturing operation to Tyco. The patent, entitled “optimal resetting of the transformer’s core in single-ended forward converters,” was issued in February 1999.

Tyco agreed to buy Lucent’s power systems division in 2000 for $2.5 billion. The company made power supplies primarily for communications carriers. Vicor produces converters, as well as other types of power components.

Vicor is seeking an injunction and damages.
