Greatbatch Releases First Model of Next-Generation Medium-Rate Battery

Greatbatch, Inc. announced the release of a new, non-proprietary model of its medium-rate implantable "Q" series battery. The battery provides a shape factor and capacity that can be readily utilized by many medical device manufacturers with little or no modification – significantly reducing the development time for new implantable devices.

The Greatbatch Q(MR) – enabled by a patented SVO-CF(X) laminated cathode – is intended to meet neurostimulation, drug-infusion, and next-generation cardiac-pacing device requirements. The Q(MR) enables more device functionality – including higher stimulation currents, more complex telemetry, and innovative sensor integration – without compromising design capability or device longevity. The Q(MR) technology represents the second generation of the Greatbatch "Q" product family; Q(HR) batteries were released in 2005 and already have been incorporated into several manufacturers’ implantable cardiac defibrillator designs.

Greatbatch claims that it "recognized this technology satisfies the critical performance requirements of the emerging neurostimulation and drug-pump markets and thus committed to providing it in a form that can be quickly integrated into medical device designs." The resulting solution is an "off-the-shelf" Q(MR) (Greatbatch Model 2570), which allows device manufacturers to "push-the-envelope" with pulsing capability in excess of 200 mA and enough capacity (approximately 940 mAh) for long life in a variety of clinical applications. Additionally, the M2570 cell offers increased magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) compatibility, in comparison to traditional cells.

"Emerging device manufacturers require robust power solutions that can be quickly incorporated into their designs," said Susan Campbell, Vice President of Greatbatch Medical Power. "We are very pleased to offer the latest generation in medium-rate technology to enable faster therapy introduction by maximizing performance without compromising reliability."
