Tyco Electronics Announces the New VLR170 and VLR230 PolySwitch PPTC Resettable Strap Devices

October 15, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

Tyco Electronics Corp. (Menlo Park, CA) announced the next generation in its line of PolySwitch PPTC resettable strap devices. The VLR230 (5mm x 12mm form factor) and VLR170 (3.6mm x 10mm form factor) devices are claimed to provide low-series resistance and enhanced thermal protection for lithium-ion and nickel-metal hydride rechargeable battery packs.

When an electrical short or over-charging condition occurs, VLR devices provide a high-resistance trip condition that eliminates cycling and resets once the fault has been cleared and power has been removed. The narrow, low-profile form of the VLR devices allows them to be welded directly onto battery cells.

Product model numbers for the VLR170 and VLR230 devices are derived from their rated hold current of 1.7A and 2.3A, respectively, at 25 degrees C. Both models provide a voltage-withstand capability of 12V, a trip current of 5A at 25 degrees C, and a maximum typical resistance of 32mohms for the VLR170 and 18mohms for the VLR230. UL, CSA and TUV certifications are pending.

Pricing starts at $0.26 to $0.40 each, depending on volume, and the devices become available this month with a delivery time of six to eight weeks.
