Power-One Intros New ZY7120 Digital POL Converter

October 10, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Power-One Inc. (Camarillo, CA) introduced its ZY7120 digital point-of-load (POL) converter, the newest digital power-management product in the company's Z-One™ digital intermediate bus architecture, which is user-programmable (via industry-standard I2C protocols) to provide a 0.5 Vdc to 5.5 Vdc digitally controlled output and power a wide range of infrastructure applications, including networking and data-storage systems.

The vertically mounted, 20 A ZY7120 delivers over 30 W/cm³ (500 W/in³) power density from a compact 8 mm x 32 mm surface-mount footprint and low-profile 14 mm height. Digital pulse-width modulation control technology facilitates up to ±1 percent output-voltage accuracy and startup into 100-percent pre-biased loads, over an ultra-wide 3 Vdc to 13.2 Vdc input range.

The I2C-programmable parameters include output tracking and sequencing, switching frequency of 0.5 MHz to 1.0 MHz, interleaving, feedback-loop compensation, and active digital current sharing that can provide 200 A from 10 paralleled Z-POL converters. Programmable protection features include output over-current and over-voltage, input under-voltage, power-good signal limits, and fault management. I2C-accessible real-time reporting includes output voltage and current, and Z-POL temperature.

Pricing for the new ZY7120 converter is approximately $16 in OEM quantities. Samples are available off-the-shelf. Production quantities are available in four to six weeks.
