Mobile Phone Industry Faces Lawsuits

March 21, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

The mobile phone industry is to face five lawsuits claiming it has failed to protect consumers from unsafe levels of radiation after a United States appeals court overturned an earlier dismissal. The Pinney vs. Nokia case seeks to sue those involved in the manufacture and sale of wireless phones, claiming the devices emit an unsafe level of RF radiation and that this fact has been hidden from consumers.

The plan is to force manufacturers to provide headsets for mobile phones. As well as punitive damages, costs and attorneys’ fees, the complainants are seeking compensation sufficient to purchase a headset and, if needed, to purchase a phone that can use a headset.

Other companies named in the suit include Ericsson, Panasonic, Philips, Qualcomm, Samsung, Sanyo, Sony, AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Cingular Wireless, Motorola, and the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA).
