line of piezoelectric inverters

October 24, 1999 by Jeff Shepard

Tamura Corporation of America (TCA, Temecula, CA) introduced a line of piezoelectric inverters. These high-performance, miniaturized products are designed for a wide variety of portable equipment, especially those that have backlit liquid crystal displays, where size and performance are crucial. TCA's initial product offering includes eight standard products, as well as, custom capability. These inverters are ideal for use in PDAs, says Bill Dull, Jr., director of marketing. They are low-profile, work well with a variety of battery inputs, and have up to 85 percent efficiencies. They also have ON/OFF and dimmer functions. Since the high-voltage output is generated using a piezoelectric transformer, there is no high-voltage 'Corona Effect.' The output is almost a perfect sine wave and ballast capacitors are not required. The product series include ranges of input voltages between 3.0V to 15.0V and output voltages between 800Vrms to 1300Vrms. The output currents range between 1.0mArms to 4.0mArms. Maximum output power ranges between 0.4W to 3.0W, with operating frequencies between 70kHz to 160kHz.
