Zetex Intros ZXTN2010Z NPN/ZXTP2012Z PNP Transistors

July 30, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Zetex Semiconductors (UK), a subsidiary of Zetex plc (Chadderton, Oldham), introduced its new ZXTN2010Z NPN and ZXTP2012Z PNP bipolar transistors that meet the performance requirements of dc motor control. Provided in the SOT89 package, they are a cost-effective alternative to larger packaged parts. The ZXTN2010Z and ZXTP2012Z are two devices from a series of eight new SOT89-packaged transistors covering a VCEO range from 25 V to 140 V, and meeting the requirements of a range of high-current circuits, including dc motor control, emergency lighting and automotive load driving.

With a collector-emitter voltage of 60 V, the ZXTN2010Z NPN and ZXTP2012Z PNP devices withstand the voltage demands of medium-power motor drive circuits. The high current gain hold-up characteristics accommodate stall currents and the bipolars' low saturation voltages ensure on-state losses are kept to a minimum. The equivalent on-resistance of the NPN and PNP transistors is 30 mΩ at 6 A and 32 mΩ at 5 A, respectively. The NPN can handle a continuous current of 5 A and a peak current up to 20 A. The equivalent figures for the PNP are 4.3 A and 15 A. The high gain characteristics of the two transistors are specified up to 10 A.

The 4.4 mm x 4.0 mm PCB footprint and power dissipation capability of 2.1 W means that the SOT89-packaged bipolars offer a viable alternative to traditional SOT223-packaged and DPAK-packaged parts, and obey the trend towards cost and space reduction in dc motor drive circuitry. Pricing for the ZXTN2010Z and ZXTP2012Z transistors is $0.24 for 10,000-piece quantities.
