Zetex Introduces the ZXRD1000 Series Demo Bread Board

May 07, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

To help designers reduce time to market, Zetex Inc. (Commack, NY) has introduced a demonstration bread board for its ZXRD1000 Series dc/dc controller ICs. A 95 percent greater efficiency can be achieved with the ZXRD1000 Series supported by the Zetex patented SimpleSynch drive circuit. The resultant reduced complexity allows for cost savings on the ZXRD size, as well as reduced overall component count.

By using a mutually coupled inductor and ferrite bead, synchronous MOSFET driving is achieved with a single PWM controller output. The controller provides all the control and protection needed for dc/dc converters, including short-circuit protection, low battery flag, low-power shut down and external adjustment of the internally set PWM switching frequency.

Available in a QSOP16 package, the controller can be operated from a supply voltage up to 18V. The demonstration board can be supplied in versions to drive either N-channel or P-channel MOSFETs, and is available in synchronous (SimpleSynch) or non-synchronous (step-down) configurations. The boards offer the user some re-configurability to provide fixed 3.3V and 5.0V, or adjustable 2.0V up to 10V or 14V output, depending on the version.

For those who qualify, Zetex will supply a free customized board, per the designer's requirements, to provide a close-to-optimum solution as a starting point. Requests for a free board must be registered at the Zetex website. Priced at $1.18 in 10,000 quantities, deliveries can start in six weeks ramping to production rates.
