Vishay Siliconix Intros Si9165BQ Programmable Controller IC

January 11, 1999 by Jeff Shepard

Vishay Siliconix (Santa Clara, CA) introduced the Si9165BQ, a fully integrated programmable controller IC designed to provide dc/dc conversion efficiencies upwards of 93 percent in cell phones and other mobile communications devices. The device, enabling a complete dc/dc converter solution that requires a footprint area of 32mm x 19mm (single-sided PCB), combines conversion circuitry with on-board n- and p-channel power MOSFETs in a surface-mount TSSOP-20. The Si9165BQ operates on an input range of 2.7V to 6V, and can be programmed to function as either a synchronous buck or a boost converter, stepping current down to 1.3V or boosting it up to 6V. The IC is capable of delivering up to 600mA of output current at 3.3V, and is claimed to be the first device of its kind to operate at frequencies up to 2MHz. When used with Vishay Dale's low-profile IHLP2516 inductor, a complete converter solution has a height profile of 2mm. Total volumetric space required for all circuitry is 1.2 cubic cm. Output capacitance requirement is less than 10uF, with peak-to-peak output ripple as low as 10mV.For designers who require additional flexibility in selecting the maximum current capability of the output stage, or whose end products use NiCd or NiMH batteries, Vishay Siliconix also offers the Si9166BQ programmable controller IC, which provides the same high-frequency and high-efficiency performance of the Si9165BQ without the on-board MOSFETs. The Si9166BQ is packaged in a surface-mount TSSOP-16.The Si9165BQ is priced at $2.30, while the Si9166BQ is priced at $1.50, in quantities of 100,000.
