Virtual Power Systems Partners with Artesyn on Software Defined Power for Data Centers

February 27, 2019 by Scott McMahan

Virtual Power Systems (VPS), creator of Software Defined Power®, is collaborating with Artesyn Embedded Technologies, Inc. to accelerate smart power provisioning and dynamic IT workload management in data center environments.

The integration of VPS' Intelligent Control of Energy (ICE) platform into Artesyn's family of power conversion systems is expected to produce significant improvements in energy utilization and distributed power management.

"We're looking forward to adding Artesyn to our growing ecosystem of technology innovators," said Steve Houck, CEO of Virtual Power Systems. "Embedding Software Defined Power into Artesyn's energy storage systems would enable power to be allocated where and when it's needed through a layer of software intelligence and virtualization. This will drive the delivery of unique power distribution systems that will bring a new level of power awareness to data centers."

According to VPS, the company enables power equipment venders and data center operators to leverage Software-Defined Power (SDP) to increase capacity, ensure availability, and enable automation.

VPS says its SDP platform brings artificial intelligence and machine learning to an infrastructure space that was traditionally seen as purely a hardware function. The SDP platform gives granular visibility and real-time energy reallocation based on capacity demands.

Artesyn's SDP-enabled power solutions will be able to identify, aggregate, and pool sources of stranded power, allowing capacity to be redistributed to any rack, node, workload, or circuit on demand.

According to VPS, the integration of SDP with leading power systems enables considerable reductions in data center capital and operational expenses while enhancing energy utilization for data centers of any size and scale.

"The Software Defined Power advantage is clear and compelling," said Brian Korn, Senior Director, Data Center Solutions, Artesyn. "Leveraging Artesyn's managed power and battery backup solutions with VPS will enable delivery of the final pillar in an overarching Software Defined Data Center strategy. The result will boost workload reliability well beyond what can be accomplished currently with just storage, memory, and compute."

Artesyn says customers also will benefit from specific ICE functionality, including peak shaving, phase balancing, dynamic power for improved rack density, and workload orchestration with VMware.
