Unipower Introduces the New MD and MF Series of Single-Output Switchers

October 29, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

Unipower Corp.'s (Coral Springs, FL) Thin-250 and Thin-400 single-output switchers, the MD and MF Series, are now available in low-profile, fan-cooled cases with an integral IEC, an input connector and an on/off switch. The MD Series produces 250W, while the MF produces 400W. There are four versions of each device available, including the open-frame or standard option; the top-covered version, called option C; a fully covered version with dual fans, called option N; and now a fully covered version with dual fans, an integral IEC input connector and an on/off switch, called option IEC.

Key features of the new model include active power correction to EN6100-3-2, a universal input of 85Vac to 264Vac, a Class B EMI input filter to EN55022, independent 5Vdc and 100mA supervisory output. Additionally, the new models feature single-wire, active-current sharing.

The control and supervisory circuits provided include dc power-good, ac power-fail and a normally open-inhibit input. The smaller size and lower profile of Unipower's new power supplies is, they claim, achieved by reduced magnetic components, extensive use of ICs, simplified circuitry and the use of surface-mount technology throughout. The supply is produced on a single circuit board with one vertically mounted control card. Surface-mount parts are mounted on the top side only and no devices are attached to the chassis. The primary circuit employs a forward converter switching with a horizontally mounted, high-frequency transformer at 150kHz.

The MD and MF Series is priced as low as $186 in OEM quantities. Delivery time is stock to eight weeks.
