Ultra-Low-Profile DC-DC Converters Feature Ceramic Capacitors

November 06, 2012 by Jeff Shepard

With a focus on product minimization, Aimtec has launched three new series of DC/DC converters featuring multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) which provide many technological advantages over traditional tantalum capacitors. MLCCs used in the AMxQ-Z family of DC/DC converters withstand high temperatures; higher voltage conditions and reduced leakage current better than traditional tantalum capacitors. Ceramic capacitors can also withstand the higher reflow temperatures associated with the lead free soldering as required for RoHS compliance.

In addition to being non-polarized, the use of MLCCs in Aimtec's AMxQ-Z power supplies provides suppressed power line noise, reduced harmonics from ripple currents, lower resistance and inductance, which helps to prevent the device and the circuit from overheating. The AMxQ-Z family features an exceptionally low profile of only 7mm (including stand offs), for applications in which component height is critical.

Available in 2 watt, 3 watt and 6 watt power ranges, the AMxQ-Z series feature wide (2:1) input ranges of 4.5-9, 9-18, 18-36 and 36-75 VDC, stepping down to tightly related (±1%) single and dual outputs of ±12 and ±15 VDC at efficiency rates as high as 88%.

Operating at temperature ranges of -40°C to +85°C (+60°C with derating), the AM2Q-Z (2watt), AM3Q-Z(3watt) and AM6Q-Z(6watt) feature I/O isolation of 500VAC, continuous short circuit protection, over voltage protection and designed to meet IEC/EN 60950-1 for IT based applications.

Samples are available from stock and can be ordered immediately from any of Aimtec's global network of Franchised Distributors.
