Tyco Unveils QRW Series of DC/DC Converters

October 25, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Tyco Electronics Power Systems (Dallas, TX) announced a new 40A

industry-standard quarter-brick dc/dc converter series. The QRW Series offers a cost-efficient, open-frame design capable of delivering up to 40A below 3.3Vout and 35A at 3.3Vout. With a footprint of 57.9mm x 36.8mm (2.3in x 1.45in) and a low-profile of only 9.5mm (0.38in), the QRW Series is suitable for high-current, low-voltage applications occupying a minimum of board space.

The QRW Series has a 48V nominal input with an input-voltage range of 36Vdc to 75Vdc. This family of converters offers output voltages of 12V, 5V, 3.3V, 2.5V, 2.0V, 1.8V, 1.5V, 1.2V and 1.0V with an output-voltage adjustment trim of +10 percent/-20 percent. In addition, the QRW modules offer an optional active load-sharing feature, allowing parallel operation of a series of converters providing a scalable solution both in output voltages and current requirements.

"With the QRW family, Tyco is offering superior performance in a industry-standard format product, as well as ensuring our customers a future-proof design. The series will support customers existing and future applications by addressing the trend for lower supply voltages and increasing load requirements," said Sabi Varma, global director of

marketing at Tyco Electronics Power Systems. "The QRW Series sets a new standard for high-density dc/dc converters, enhancing Tyco Electronics' reputation for reliability and innovative technology".

Other features of the QRW Series include remote-output voltage sensing, tightly regulated output voltages, over-temperature protection, output over-current protection, over-voltage protection and input under-voltage protection. The module is designed to meet requirements for basic insulation.

Samples of the 3.3V, 2.5V, 1.8V, 1.5V and 1.2V versions are available now. The modules are priced at $87.00 in 1,000-unit quantities.
