Tyco Introduces Innovative Insulation and Blade Design to Enable Power Connector Space Savings

July 18, 2006 by Jeff Shepard

Tyco Electronics Corp. MINIPAK family of board-to-board power connectors now includes a stacked MINIPAK connector with customized insulator options and a DualBlade contact design to reduce connector length and conserve printed circuit board real estate. The use of Insulation Displacement Contact (IDC) ribbon cabling shifts signal interconnects to the upper portion of the connector to customize the insulator and reduce connector length. DualBlade contacts also shorten the connector length by dividing the same level of power between the two separate blade sides contained within the space typically used by one full power blade. The DualBlade contact feature of the connector is especially useful when separate current feeds and returns are desired for each differing voltage.

Tyco Electronics' stacked MINIPAK power connectors utilize ELCON high performance CROWN BAND power contact technology to achieve superior electrical performance by maximizing points of contact and minimizing contact resistance. The contact pitch available for stacked MINIPAK high density power connectors can meet a variety of system requirements in 7.5mm, 6.0mm, and 4.5mm configurations.

David Beck, Tyco Electronics' product manager comments, "The stacked MINIPAK connector provides high density, high current, and high performance power solutions by reducing connector length through insulator and blade design to pack high power levels in such minimal spacing."

Tyco Electronics' stacked MINIPAK power connectors mount to the board either by solder or compliant press-fit tails. Solder tails are available in two lengths to support a variety of board thicknesses. The connectors are also designed with blind mating features directly in the connector housing. The pin housings are fully shrouded and the socket contacts are recessed to be finger probe-proof to protect all power contacts.

Stacked MINIPAK connectors provide power connection solutions in telecom and computer applications including routers, servers, mini and supercomputers, UPS, and hot swap and N+1 power distribution. All Tyco Electronics' MINIPAK power connectors meet UL (USR and CNR) safety regulatory requirements.
