Tyco Electronics Debuts New PolySwitch RXE005 Device

August 22, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Tyco Electronics Corp. (Menlo Park, CA) announced that its popular line of PolySwitch resettable over-current protection has been extended to include the new RXE005 device. With an industry-low 50mA hold current, this Polymeric Positive Temperature Coefficient (PPTC) device can protect closer to the actual operating current, thereby providing the tightest envelope of protection ever offered in a radial-leaded PPTC device, according to the company.

At 20 degrees C, the RXE005 will hold 50mA and has a trip current of 100mA. It is 60V rated and is capable of interrupting up to 40A. The RXE005 device is designed for binary and analog I/O protection, as well as for protection of industrial communications networks using such links as RS-485 and RS-232.

"The RXE005 was developed to meet the needs of designers in areas of sensor, actuator and communications connectivity," said Steve Zalewski, Worldwide Industrial market manager for the Raychem Circuit Protection (Menlo Park, CA) division of Tyco Electronics. "It provides protection for I/O and data communications lines at closer tolerances than ever before, with minimal impact on communication distance or signal clarity."

The RXE Series devices are available in straight-lead or kinked-lead configurations, and are supplied in tape and reel packaging for compatibility with high-volume assembly equipment. UL, CSA, and TUV agency certifications are currently pending.

The pricing is $0.159 for volumes of 100,000 per year. Samples and SCDs are available from six to eight weeks.
