TT electronics Unveils WA80Z Series Resistors

October 07, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

The IRC Inc. Wirewound and Film Technologies Division of TT electronics plc (Boone, NC) introduced a resistor series with power ratings up to 3W using an innovative "Z" lead configuration to enable high-power axial resistors to be surface-mountable. Designated the WA80Z Series, the flame-proof resistors represent an economical alternative to costly molded power devices for applications requiring surface-mount components with high power ratings.

Developed by IRC’s sister company Welwyn Components Ltd., the WA80Z Series resistors are available in 2W and 3W power ratings (at 25 degrees C), and in resistance values from 0.05 Ohms to 2 Megohms with tolerances to five percent. TCRs range from 350ppm/C to 200ppm/C. The operating temperature range is from –55 to +155 degrees C, enabling the resistors to be specified for automotive applications.

The WA80Z Series resistors are constructed using a wirewound resistive element around a ceramic substrate, which is fitted with end caps and welded termination wires. The component body is coated with a UL 94-0 rated, flame-proof, silicone cement coating. The resistors are packaged on standard reel in "blister-pack" tape, and are compatible with high-speed, automatic-placement equipment.

Pricing for the WA80Z Series resistors is $3 in quantities of 1,000. Lead times are from 8 to 12 weeks.
