Tripp Lite Intros 6kVA and 10kVA Unison UPSs

April 21, 1999 by Jeff Shepard

Tripp Lite (Chicago) introduced the new 6kVA and 10kVA Unison UPS systems, which utilize Tripp Lite's high-frequency double conversion technology to provide internetworking, datacenter, telecom and mid-range computing applications with uninterrupted sine wave power. The Unison UPSs are true on-line UPS systems, which continually convert incoming ac power to filtered dc power, then resynthesize it back to low-harmonic, frequency-controlled ac power. The new 6kVA and 10kVA UPSs feature a Line-Interactive Mode option that allows users to switch the UPSs into an energy-saving mode when on-line protection is not needed. This feature is claimed to increase the UPS's overall power efficiency, resulting in reduced operating costs while not affecting system output reliability under brownout or blackout conditions.According to Tripp Lite, unlimited battery packs can be added to the 6kVA and 10kVA models to create virtually limitless runtimes. The battery packs include Tripp Lite's exclusive integrated battery chargers, which are claimed to allow battery pack configurations of any size to recharge to full capacity in a fraction of the time required by competitive models that rely solely on the main power module for battery recharging. The Unison UPS systems can also be cold-started from their batteries to deliver temporary ac power to attached equipment when utility power is not available. The UPSs also include two built-in serial communications ports and one AS400 dry-contact interface port, as well as Tripp Lite's PowerAlert Software. The units also feature an accessory slot that accepts an optional SNMP/Web card, allowing remote SNMP and web-based management of network UPS systems and environmental conditions.Tripp Lite announced that its PowerAlert software has been upgraded to include PowerAlert Enterprise, an application that provides a single graphical-interface of UPS systems network-wide, and lets users react to alerts remotely, without having to purchase a Network Management System. The Unison 6kVA and 10kVA UPS systems are priced at $5,499 and $9,499, respectively.
