Toyota Motor Begins Experimental Car-Pooling Program

April 11, 1999 by Jeff Shepard

Toyota Motor Corp. (Japan) plans to begin an experimental car-pooling program in late May with its employees. The automaker has recruited about 300 employees to use its two-seater "e-com" vehicles to commute to work and between factories in a 25km radius around its Toyota City headquarters. Employees will use IC cards and the company intranet to reserve the cars. Their movements will be tracked and analyzed by an experimental traffic management system using the global positioning system.
