TI Intros Three RS-485 Half-Duplex Transceivers

June 29, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Texas Instruments Inc. (TI, Dallas, TX) announced three new full-featured, low-power, 5 V, half-duplex, RS-485 transceivers that offer bus-pin electrostatic discharge protection of 15 kV. With an industry-standard SN75176 footprint and integrated receiver failsafe design, the products eliminate the need for external components and provide a feature set for industrial automation and battery-powered applications.

The SN65HVD485 and SN65HVD308x half-duplex transceivers are suitable for RS-485 data bus networks. Powered by a 5 V supply, they are fully compliant with the TIA/EIA-485A standard. The HVD3085E and HVD3088E are designed to operate with low supply current, typically less than 0.4 mA, excluding the load. When in the inactive shutdown mode, the supply current typically drops to a few nanoamps, making the devices suitable for power-sensitive applications.

The devices are available now in eight-pin SOIC, DIP and MSOP packages. In 1,000-unit quanities, the SN65HVD485E is $0.59, the SN65HVD3082E is $0.60, the SN65HVD3085E is $0.70, and the SN65HVD3088E is $0.80.
