June 23, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Texas Instruments Inc. (TI, Dallas, TX) announced a new hot-plug power controller that provides design flexibility and higher power efficiency when controlling two slots of power supplies in peripheral component interconnect (PCI) bus and PCI-X hot plug server applications.

The TPS2341 dual-slot, hot-plug controller contains main supply power control; auxiliary power supply control; power FETs for 3.3V, 5V and 12V; -12V main supplies and auxiliary 3.3V supplies; and an I²C serial interface for communications with and control of both power slots.

Additional features include hot-swap protection and control of all supplies, over-current protection, isolation of any load fault in one slot from any other slot, under-voltage monitoring for all supplies except -12V, power fault latching, and a -40°C to +85°C range with over-temperature shutdown.

The new TPS2341 controller is available in volume now in a 48-pin, thermally enhanced, thin quad flat pack package. Suggested pricing per unit in quantities of 1,000 is $4.
