Texas Instruments Inc. (Dallas, TX) introduced its new TPS2145, which is claimed to be industry's first family of products combining 3.3V LDO regulators and dual-power switches in a single chip for use in USB and portable applications. They provide a complete power-management solution for PDAs and other battery-powered systems.

The devices, with their high level of integration, are said to save up to 60 percent of board space over today's typical two-chip solutions. They are likewise said to simplify design and hasten time-to-market.

The LDO-switch family offers flexible combinations of dual-port protected switching and LDO voltage regulation for USB-powered and portable systems. The devices provide 3.3V regulated output from a 5V input with 200mA continuous current for USB controllers and other circuitry. The family also includes both active-high and active-low enable switch configuration versions. An adjustable LDO option with 1V to 3.3V output from a 2.9V to 5.5V input is likewise available.

The devices are housed in 8-pin and 10-pin MSOP PowerPad packages.
