TI Debuts TPS6110x Series Power Management Devices

July 22, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Texas Instruments Inc. (TI, Dallas, TX) announced three new power management devices that provide dual outputs for system and core voltages that help increase battery life, targeting hand-held applications powered by common battery types. The TPS61130 is a synchronous SEPIC step-up or step-down switching converter with a LDO. The TPS61100 and TPS61120 devices are synchronous step-up dc/dc converters with LDO linear regulators.

The new TPS6110x, TPS6112x and TPS6113x ICs offer a complete, cost-efficient power supply solution for systems powered by single-cell lithium and single- and dual-cell alkaline, NiCd and NiMH batteries. Pulse-width modulation switching results in up to 95-percent conversion efficiency. A low 40µA quiescent current saves power when the system is in operating mode. Integration of switching transistors and a 4mm x 4mm quad-flat package with no leads saves board space and helps simplify design.

The TPS6110x generates 1.5V to 5.5V with an LDO generating 0.9V to 3.6V that can be derived either from the converter output or directly from the battery. The boost converter provides an output current of up to 200mA and operates with supply voltages down to 0.8V. The TPS6112x generates 2.5V to 5.5V with an LDO generating 0.9V to 5.5V. The boost converter provides an output current of up to 400mA and operates with supply voltages down to 1.8V. The TPS6113x is similar to the TPS6112x, except it contains a LDO with a synchronous SEPIC converter that can function as either a step-up or step-down, boost or buck converter.

The TPS611xx devices are now available in volume. The TPS6110x is available in a 20-pin, TSSOP, and the TPS6112x and TPS6113x in a 16-pin TSSOP. Availability of a 24-pin QFN for the TPS6110x and a 16-pin QFN for the TPS6112x and TPS6113x is scheduled for later in the third quarter of 2002. Suggested pricing for the TPS611xx family of devices starts at $1.75 each in quantities of 1,000 units.
