Sony Announces Intent to Produce Li-Ion Polymer Batteries in Mexico

Sony Corp. (Tokyo) announced that it will start producing lithium-ion polymer batteries in Mexico by October, to cash in on the rising demand for hand-held telephones in North America. According to a spokesman, Sony expects the demand for the rechargeable batteries, which will be thinner and lighter than widely used lithium-ion batteries, to grow rapidly as mobile devices become more compact.The production of 500,000 to 700,000 cells a month will take place at the Mexican subsidiary, Sony Nuevo Laredo S.A. de C.V.Initial investment in the stock will be about two billion (Japanese yen).
