Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC) has struck a deal with Texas Instruments Inc. (TI, Dallas, TX) to produce 90nm logic wafers. Chinese foundry SMIC said it has ordered tools to produce 90 nm designs, with shipments due in the current quarter and pilot production expected in the first quarter of 2005. SMIC did not disclose financial details of the deal.
"The development is on track. Overall, we are scheduled to achieve 125,000 8 in equivalent wafers per month by the end of 2004," stated SMIC President and CEO Richard Chang.
Independently, TI has been focused on 90 nm. The company announced that it was ramping its Dallas, TX, 300 mm fab to 90 nm. At that time, TI had said it planned to extend its outside 90 nm partnerships, but did not detail any specific moves.
