SMD Varistors Designed for LED Lighting Applications

Stackpole's PV Series offers superior voltage protection in a molded surface mount package. Specifically designed for LED drivers, the PV Series offers working voltages from 11Vrms to 300Vrms so it can handle any design based on 120Vac or 240Vac. They have a dc operating voltage from 14- to 385-Vdc.

The PV Series is available in 3225 and 4032 chip sizes and is rated for up to 1200 Amps of current and 30J of energy. The plastic molded case provides excellent protection from environmental hazards and the compliant terminations ensure reliable connection and operation under high temperature gradients or board flex.

The PV Series of surface mount plastic-encapsulated varistors designed to protect electronic equipment against high voltage surges in the low and medium voltage region. They offer direct SMD equivalents to 5mm and 7mm leaded disc varistors. The thermoplastic encapsulation is non-flammable according to the standard defined by UL94V-0. Terminations are tinned copper sheet.

These varistors are rated for continuous operation at 85 degrees C and have a response time under 5ns. Pricing for the PV series in low volume ranges from $0.28 to $0.42 each depending on size and voltage.
