May 11, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Sipex Corp. (Milpitas, CA) announced its Photo Detector Integrated Circuit (PDIC), the SP8051, which is designed to meet the requirements of next-generation, writeable DVD and CD drives. The SP8051 offers four high-speed data detection channels and four additional tracking channels. The device features slew rates of 350V/µs and offers 70db PSRR with less than 5mV of differential offset between the channels.

The SP8051 also features a 140MHz bandwidth, three selectable gain settings, a 5mV output offset, a 12ns differential output settling time, a 9ns fast channel settling time, a 1ns group delay, a 17ns saturation recovery time, differential outputs with 2.7V output swing, and 16-pin clear COB packaging of 4.9mm x 4.0mm.

The SP8051 is available now and is priced at $1.55 in 100,000-piece quantities. An evaluation board is also available to assist in the evaluation of the SP8051.
