Semtech Announces Availability of SC1454 ULDO Regulator

February 06, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Semtech Corp. (Newbury Park, CA) announced the production-level availability of their SC1454 150mA, low-noise, dual-linear regulator. This device features the small packaging, low quiescent current and low dropout voltage necessary for portable, battery-powered products. The device is a dual Ultra Low Dropout Regulator (ULDO) designed to fully support a single-cell Li-ion battery or four-cell NiMH/Alkaline applications.

The SC1454 contains two independently-enabled, ULDO voltage regulators, which operate from a single input voltage range of 2.25V to 6.5V with a wide variety of output voltage options available as standard offerings. One ULDO has a fixed output, and the other is made either fixed or adjustable by using external resistors.

The SC1454 utilizes CMOS technology to achieve a typical operating current of 130uA, with both ULDOs at full load. Each regulator has its own enable pin. The dropout voltage is typically 52mV at 50mA. In addition, the device is guaranteed to provide 400mA of peak current for applications that require high initial inrush current. Other features of the SC1454 include two-percent output voltage accuracy over the full industrial temperature range, reverse battery, short-circuit and over-temperature protection. Each regulator is guaranteed to deliver 150mA of output current. The SC1454 is designed for use with low ESR ceramic capacitors. Additionally, the device has a bypass pin to enable the user to capacitively decouple the bandgap reference for very low output noise, down to 50uVrms.

"The SC1454 allows designers the flexibility of having many standard output voltage pairs available in one space-saving package," commented Eddie Yeow, director of portable power management products for Semtech Corp. "It represents another device in our portfolio of portable power management products which offer specific solutions without including unnecessary, costly features."

The SC1454, packaged in a low-profile MSOP-8, is priced at $1.25 for 1,000-unit quantities.
