SEMIKRON Int'l Launches New SKiiP Generation

December 12, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

SEMIKRON International (Nürnberg, Germany) launched a new SKiiP generation at electronica 2000. SKiiP 3rd generation is based on a modular power section comprising a dual switch with the new IGBT 3 -- 1,200V -- and inverse controlled axial lifetime diodes. The new generation has compatible interfaces and dimensions with the present SKiiP product line.

Semikron claims that the new SKiiP generation will technically and logistically simplify the application of high-power IGBT inverters up to the megawatt power range. All internal connectors in the new SKiiP generation are eliminated. Additionally, the system features full encapsulation of the gate driver. It has an auxiliary power supply range of 13V to 30V and employs high-performance ceramics in order to reduce Rthjh by 30 percent.

The company claims that the introduction of third-generation IGBTs reduces power losses by 25 percent, while the active area is increased by 40 percent. Also, the modular design of the new SKiiP generation allows for different technologies and power levels.
