ROAL Debuts 1U Front End with Digital Power Management

February 08, 2006 by Jeff Shepard

ROAL Electronics USA Inc. debuted its new Power Rack family RHPS225 in 1U 19 inches suitable for computers, data storage, industrial, and communication applications using distributed power architectures. The rack series can be populated on demand with up to 5 units together for a maximum output power of 6,000W for the 12V version RHPS225, and up to 7,500W for the 48V version RHPS225A. The RHPS225 is available also as a stand-alone part with power supplies shipped separately.

Each model operates with an input voltage range of 90 to 264Vac and features hot swap and redundant parallel operation capabilities. The 1,200W, 12Vdc output RHPS224 features a power density of 17W/inch3 and an operating efficiency >87%, 90% at nominal input voltage. The 1,500W, 48Vdc output RHPS224A delivers 21W/in³, with typical efficiency >90%, 92% at nominal input.

Both versions operate without a minimum output load and provide a 12Vdc or 5Vdc stand-by output power for application system's control circuits. Key features include, parallelable racks function for higher power share, system communication on an I²C bus, and digital current sharing over the I²C bus

Active power factor correction is based on a digital multiphase control technique and delivers power factors up to 0.99 at full load and nominal input voltage. These hot-swappable front-end power supplies offer full active current sharing capabilities. Internal OR'ing MOSFETs deliver N+1 redundancy. The digital I2C communication bus provides output voltage and current monitoring with digital output voltage adjustment, remote on-off, AC fail, AC & DC Ok, and power good signals, temperature monitoring, as well as additional performance data.

The operating temperature range is -15 to +50 ° C at full load. The units can be operated at derated power levels up to 70 ° C. The internal fans run with temperature controlled speed for low acoustic noise and extended fan life.

These ac-dc power supplies feature active power limiting during overload, latched or self recovered short circuit, two steps of over temperature, automatic temperature derating and thermal shutdown with self recovery.

They comply with UL/cUL, CE, UL1950, CSA C22.2 No950, and EN60950. They also comply with EN61000-3-2 and other EMC regulations, including the EN55022 Level B & FCC Class B for conducted and radiated emission. The1U high X 19 inches wide X 16.9 inches deep RHPS225 series is RoHS compliant.
