Reliant Energy Inc. (Houston, TX) has been awarded a contract by the US Department of Defense (DOD) to supply energy to several military installations, including the Andrews Air Force Base and the Walter Reed Medical Center. The Defense Energy Support Center approved the contract on Wednesday. The 17-month contract calls for Reliant Energy to supply 93 MW of electricity beginning July 4, 2004. Valued at $35.9 million, the contract will save taxpayers $11.7 million when compared with the regulated standard offer service.
"Despite the fact that energy prices have generally been on the rise, there are still opportunities for large institutions such as hospitals, government agencies and military installations to save money on their energy bills," said Jim Ajello, president, Reliant Energy. "We are pleased that we offered the best combination of savings, service and reliability for the nation's taxpayers. We also appreciate the federal government's vote of confidence in trusting us to provide our armed forces with such an essential service."
