Qi 30W Inductive Charging Chipset Said to Charge as Fast as Wired Chargers

Integrated Device Technology, Inc. (IDT), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Renesas Electronics Corporation, announced sampling of the P9415 receiver and P9247 transmitter for wireless charging of up to 30W. The transmitter and receiver work together to enable smartphones to charge wirelessly, thereby narrowing the gap in charging time between wireless and wired charging options. IDT says its new wireless charging chipset enables wireless charging of smartphones as quickly as using wired connections.

“At the IDT lab in San Jose, we have met this historic challenge with these innovative ICs that boast 90% of dc to dc efficiency for 30W of power transfer with a standard low profile coil (<0.35mm) suitable for smartphone integration,” said Christopher Stephens, vice president and general manager of IDT’s Wireless Power Division. “Very fast wireless charging for smartphones has been the holy grail in the industry for the last eight years and the P9415 / P9247 chipset is the latest example of IDT’s continued advancement of state-of-the-art wireless charging technology. We expect this release to spur even broader adoption of wireless charging in 4G and 5G smartphones.”

P9415 Receiver

The P9415 receiver supports up to 20V from the onboard LDO with the ultra-accurate current sense capability needed for high-power applications. It is footprint compatible with the company’s existing P9382A 15V receiver to offer a compelling upgrade option for even faster charging.

The P9415 is a highly-integrated single-chip wireless power receiver for 30W applications. The device can be configured to receive or transmit an ac power signal through magnetic induction. When the device is configured as wireless power transmitter, it uses an on-chip full/half-bridge inverter, a PWM generator, and a modulator/demodulator for communication, and a micro-controller to produce an AC power signal to drive external L-C tank to Wattshare. As a receiver, the P9415 receives an ac power signal from a wireless transmitter and converts it into rectified output voltage, which can be then used to power devices or supply the charger input in mobile applications.

The P9415 feature multiple-time programmable (MTP) non-volatile memory to easily update control firmware and device functions. The receiver accommodates up to 20V out of the on-board LDO with the ultra-accurate current sense capability needed for high power applications. It is footprint compatible with IDT’s existing P9382A 15V receiver to provide a compelling upgrade option delivering even faster charging times.

With over-temperature and robust over-voltage protection, P9415 manages fault conditions associated with power transfer with a 32bit ARM® Cortex®-M0 processor. The processor offers a high level of programmability while consuming extremely low standby power, and it can control GPIOs to indicate operating and fault modes. The P9415 is available in an ultra-small WLCSP-53 package.

Featuring the company’s Wattshare™ technology with up to 10W of transmit power capability, IDT says it can also unlock the ecosystem potential for OEMs to charge devices including earbuds, smartwatches, and other on-the-go applications.

IDT designed and tested the device for robustness in the over-voltage and load transient situations that are inherent in wireless power transfer at these high-power levels.

P9247 Transmitter

The P9247 transmitter provides up to 30W of power to the receiver, and it is converged, supporting all Qi-based power transfer protocols (including EPP, BPP, and proprietary protocol extensions), as well as popular wall adapter protocols. The transmitter incorporates new technology for real-time foreign object detection (FOD), ensuring maximum utility and safety. Additionally, the transmitter allows power adjustment via frequency, duty-cycle, and/or bridge voltage adjustment, and it offers significant margins to EMI requirements in all regions of the world.

P9247 is a highly integrated, magnetic induction, wireless power transmitter that supports up to 15W in compliance with the WPC-1.2.4 specification and 30W in proprietary applications. The device complies with all popular wireless charging protocols including the WPC Baseline Power Profile (BPP), Extended Power Profile (EPP). It provides up to 7.5W charging for iPhones, and Android proprietary fast charging modes. This system-on-chip solution (SoC) operates with an input voltage range of 5V to 19V and supports various types of wall adapters.

Like the P9415 receiver, the P9247 transmitter includes a 32-bit ARM® Cortex®-M0 processor, offering a high level of programmability and extremely low standby power consumption.

The P9247 generates power through the power coil. It detects the presence of a wireless power receiver, decodes the communication packets from the receiver, and adjusts the transmitted power by controlling the voltage based on feedback from the receiver. The transmitter also allows for power adjustment via frequency, duty-cycle, and/or bridge voltage adjustment, and offers significant margin to EMI requirements in all regions of the world.

The P9247 is available in a lead-free, space-saving 48-VFQFPN package. The product is rated for a -40ºC to +85ºC operating temperature range.
