Primarion Delivers PX3535/3536 Digital Power Chipsets

February 07, 2005 by Jeff Shepard

Primarion Inc. (Tempe, AZ), a mixed-signal semiconductor company that provides digital control of power solutions, announced its second-generation suite of Primarion™ Digital Multiphase Power products. Comprised of the Primarion PowerCode® PX3535 six-phase digital controller, PowerCode® PX3536 four-phase digital controller and PowerCode® PX3520 Power Stage, the new chipset advances digital control for powering next-generation 90 nm digital devices.

Building upon Primarion's first-generation digital power products, the Digital Multiphase Power chipset offers operating voltages between 1.1 V and 1.3 V and required supply regulation of 40 mV. The Digital Power chipsets have demonstrated industry-leading efficiency of 85% at 120 A load current in a small 1U voltage regulator module configuration (1 in x 4 in).

The PowerCode PX3535 digital multiphase controller manages one to six phases, while the PX3536 manages up to four phases. The controllers have integrated analog-to-digital converters that digitize voltage, current and temperature. Available in 48-lead LQFP plastic packages, the digital controllers feature self-calibrating current sense, active transient response, integrated non-volatile memory, programmable switching frequency range between 300 KHz and 1.5 MHz, and digitally programmable loadline and loop compensation.

The PowerCode PX3520 Power Stage integrates two MOSFET drivers and a control MOSFET into a power-efficient chip-scale package, delivering up to 30 A per phase. The Primarion PX3520 operates up to a 1 MHz switching frequency and provides an integrated temperature and a patented process independent current-sensing circuit that deliver improved accuracy over discrete solutions.

The Primarion PowerCode PX3535 and PX3536 digital controllers, and the PowerCode PX3520 Power Stage are available now.
