PowerCache Introduces the PC5 Ultracapacitor

May 28, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

PowerCache (San Diego, CA), a Maxwell Technologies company, has expanded its ultracapacitor product line with the introduction of the PC5 ultracapacitor. The PC5 ultracapacitor measures 17 x 24 x 4.5mm, weighs 5.5 grams and has a capacitance of 4 farads at a nominal 2.3V, making it a small, long-lasting solution for sizing an energy source to meet overall power requirements and peak power needs.

The PC5 can be used in tandem with batteries for applications that require both a constant low-power discharge for continual function and a pulse of power for peak loads. In these applications, the PC5 relieves batteries of peak power functions, resulting in an extension of battery life and a reduction of overall battery size and system cost.

"With its small size, large capacitance and very low ESR," said Robert Tressler, vice-president of sales and marketing at PowerCache, "the PC5 is ideal for consumer electronics, wireless transmission, medical devices, automatic meter readers and many other applications requiring a pulse of energy that cannot be efficiently provided by a battery or power supply alone. The PC5 ultracapacitor is also an ideal source of back-up power and pulse. It can provide extended power availability, allowing critical information and functions to remain available during dips, sags and outages in a power supply or battery charge. The PC5 is also capable of accepting charges at the identical rate of discharges for systems that can benefit from regenerative energy."
