Power-One Debuts Second Nex Family POL Converters

January 29, 2004 by Jeff Shepard

Power-One Inc. (Camarillo, CA) announced the second series of products in its Nex™ family of point-of-load (POL) converters. The latest 5 A YNM, 10 A YNL and 16 A YNS non-isolated, dc-dc converters are optimized for operation from a 3 Vdc to 5.5 Vdc intermediate bus architecture (IBA) bus. The maXyz™ IBA-compatible products are designed and manufactured by di/dt, a Power-One company.

The Nex™ family combines industry-standard footprints and trim equations with enhanced features and improved electrical and thermal performance. The SMD converters are available in 0.8 in x 0.45 in x 0.25 in (20.3 mm x 11.4 mm x 6.3 mm) and 1.3 in x 0.53 in x 0.314 in (33 mm x 13.5 mm x 8 mm) packages. The YNL products offer fixed outputs from 0.9 Vdc to 3.3 Vdc. The YMM and YNS products provide programmable outputs from 0.75 Vdc to 3.3 Vdc, facilitating the use of one part number for multiple applications.

Benchmarked with a 3.3 Vdc output at 85 °C ambient temperature, and utilizing only natural convection cooling, all three series deliver their full-rated output current. Other features include remote on/off, an output-voltage adjust pin, remote sense, no minimum load requirements, startup into pre-biased outputs to facilitate sequencing, input under-voltage lockout, thermal shutdown and over-current protection.

In quantities of 1,000 pieces, the YNM, YNL and YNS products are priced at $9.50, $13.00 and $16.00, respectively. Samples and production are available now. The converters are shipped in tape-and-reel packing to facilitate automatic handling and pick-and-place assembly.
