Power Integrations, the inventor of EcoSmart® energy-efficiency technology, announced that it has been added to The Cleantech Index effective March 29, 2008.
The Cleantech Index is comprised of 46 public companies that are described as leaders in clean technology innovation and commercial deployment across a broad range of industry sectors, including energy efficiency, renewables, air and water purification and eco-friendly agriculture. To be included in the Index, companies must derive 50% of either their sales or operating profits from cleantech businesses, and stocks must have a floated market capitalization of at least $150 million.
Power Integrations integrated circuits with EcoSmart technology are used in power supplies, which convert high-voltage ac power from a wall outlet into the low-voltage dc power needed by most electronic products. EcoSmart technology is said to intelligently manage the flow of power through a power supply, to reduce energy consumption during normal operation, and to maximize efficiency during "standby" power conditions and cut no-load losses by up to 97%.

Among the member companies of the Cleantech Index are First Solar Inc., ABB Ltd., Suntech Power Holdings Co Ltd., Sunpower Corp., Ansys Inc., Cree Inc., Baldor Electric, Energy Conversion Devices Inc., EnerSys Inc., Echelon Corp., and American Superconductor Corp..
International Rectifier, Power-One, and EnerNOC, Inc. have been removed from the Cleantech Index.
