December 11, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

Philips Semiconductors (Eindhoven, the Netherlands) announced its new ultra-low power, cost-optimized, high-performance family of smart card controller ICs, the SmartMX. The new ICs are suitable for use in single- and multi-application markets such as mobile communications, secure network access and transportation.

The new SmartMX products are manufactured using 0.18µm, five metal-layer technology and will support Class A, B and C (1.8V to 5V) voltage ranges, as specified by standards such as 3GPP and EMV. Their contact interface meets the ISO 7816 physical standard for contact smart cards, while their contactless interface complies with the MIFARE range of products used in a wide variety of transport schemes and are compliant with the ISO14443A standard. The USB1.1 interface enables it to produce plug-and-play-compatible IC cards for secure access.
