Phihong PoE Switch Powers Four IEEE802.3af Devices From a Single Cat5 Cable

March 25, 2010 by Jeff Shepard

PhihongUSA has developed a four-port, PoE extender that accepts ultra-power PoE and extends the reach of data and Power-over-Ethernet to 200 meters, doubling the cabling distance available for remotely powering security cameras, wireless network and access controllers. Designated the POE60S-4AF, this PoE switch is well suited for security system applications because it allows four IEEE802.3af devices to be powered over a single Cat5 cable without having to add remote power.

"PoE extenders deliver Ethernet data and POE power at double the distance than was previously available, offering greater installation flexibility and increased savings in security applications," said Keith Hopwood, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Phihong USA. "This new PoE switch further eases implementation and increases the power delivered by extending the Ethernet cable’s reach further distances and by powering multiple devices from a single cable."

The POE60S-4AF extender is powered by Ultra PoE (60W) and provides four 10/100 switch ports. Each port offers a full 15.4W of power.

When implemented, four security cameras can be plugged into the extender’s four ports, with cable up to 100m in length. The extender’s switch port is then connected to an Ultra PoE midspan with another 100m cable, allowing the four cameras to be connected up to 200 meters away from the closet, without any additional power outlets or dc cabling required.

The POE60S-4AF starts at $542.80 in single unit quantities.
