ON Semiconductor Debuts NCP1200 PWM

March 04, 2001 by Jeff Shepard

ON Semiconductor LLC (Phoenix, AZ) unveiled a new Pulse Width Modulator (PWM) current-mode controller for low-power universal off-line power supplies. The NCP1200, an off-line controller, allows for implementation of 42V to 500V off-line power supplies with minimal external components. It is suitable for applications in which low part count and low power are critical.

The NCP1200 is self-supplied from a dc rail requiring no transformer auxiliary winding or associated passive components. A built-in 40kHz, 60kHz or 100kHz fixed-frequency oscillator enables the controller to drive low gate-charge switching devices such as MOSFETs or IGBTs. It has flexible start-up and standby-mode over-current protection, and enters the skip-cycle mode at very low or no-load conditions.

"With the introduction of the NCP1200, ON Semiconductor now offers the fastest path to SMPS design," stated Leslie Logan, analog marketing manager at ON Semiconductor. "Based on a high-performance, high-voltage technology, the NCP1200 incorporates all the necessary components normally needed in UC384X-based supplies. It is the latest in the company's power-management portfolio that furthers its penetration into the power supply market."

The NCP1200 fulfills International Energy Agency recommendations for standby power. It is available in SO-8 and DIP-8 packages, and has a suggested retail price of $0.43 in 10,000-unit quantities.
