Nichicon Launches Mass Production of Low-Resistance EDLCs

October 20, 2018 by Paul Shepard

Nichicon Corp. has launched mass production of lead-type low-resistance electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) to meet market need for longer life products. These products will be displayed at CEATEC JAPAN 2018, held at Makuhari Messe from Tuesday, October 16, to Friday, October 19.

Nichicon developed and launched the JUA Series, offering one-fourth the resistance of current products with double the life at 2,000 hours as a new lead-type low-resistance electric double layer capacitor series meeting market needs.

The JUA Series incorporates revisions from a structural perspective in pursuit of low resistance, adopting components that stabilize electrolytes over a long period of time. In addition, the design was optimized overall, including other materials. For applications requiring high instantaneous output, the use of low-resistance devices offer the benefit of reducing voltage drop during discharge and enabling parts miniaturization.

For example, devices that discharge 1.2A for three seconds or more between 5V and 2V during use for 10 years at 40°C currently require a volume of 7.7cc in two series of φ12.5 size, but this newly developed product can be downsized two series to φ10 size and 3.1cc in volume by approximately 60%, with the installation of this product contributing to the equipment miniaturization.

Lead-type low-resistance electric double layer capacitors are used for smart meter backup power sources and auxiliary power sources for printers and projectors, as well as in drive recorders, which are attracting attention as safety equipment, in addition being increasingly used as a backup power sources for impact-sensing door lock systems that automatically unlock all doors when a strong impact to the vehicle is detected.

Sales for drive recorders in particular have significantly increased in recent years, used for applications requiring instantaneous output in the event of an emergency, when lower power supply devices with lower resistance are required and when long-term use is necessary.

As a backup power sources, these products are also suited for portable game devices and storage servers, enabling maintenance-free operation and lower environmental impacts when used to replace secondary batteries.
