Fairchild Semiconductor International (South Portland, ME) announced that it plans to expand its operations in China. The company is adding "Global Power Resource Centers" in Shanghai and Shenzhen, and increasing the headcount and capacity at its Suzhou facility.
"China is a key part of Fairchild's global strategy, as clearly indicated by our commitment to this region through many initiatives including our Global Power Resource Centers and our Suzhou facility," said Keric Kuo, president and managing director for Asia Pacific at Fairchild. "When combined with the recent opening of the joint technology laboratory with Changhong, these announcements demonstrate Fairchild's penetration of this complex and rapidly expanding market."
The power resource centers are designed to offer expertise and equipment on power designs for electronic applications in the dominant Asian markets of consumer, computing and telecom as well as automotive, industrial and ultra-portable applications. Fairchild is also increasing headcount and capacity at its assembly and test facility and automated warehouse in Suzhou. The facility, opened in the fall of 2003, originally employed 570 people. That number has grown to 820 and the company expects that 2,000 will work there by 2005. Upon completion of the second phase, Fairchild expects 3,500 people to work at the plant.
