Compact Inverter Combines Management of Solar, Energy Storage, and Home Energy

May 13, 2019 by Scott McMahan

SolarEdge Technologies, Inc. reported that it will expand its StorEdge solution with the launch of new inverters that the company optimized for managing a combination of solar, energy storage, and home energy. The company will also preview its own residential and commercial batteries to complement its smart solar energy portfolio.

"As the evolving solar energy market focuses on increasing self-consumption and grid stabilization, PV-plus-storage solutions are becoming a critical factor in the proliferation of smart solar energy ecosystems"

The StorEdge portfolio expansion will include three new additions.

In June of 2019, SolarEdge plans to release a single-phase inverter with HD-Wave technology that integrates the management of solar, storage, and home energy into one inverter. The company says that the combination of all of these functions into one inverter will simplify installation, improve system RoI, and increase self-consumption.

The SolarEdge power optimizer handles maximum power point tracking and voltage management separately for each solar module. This means that the single-phase inverter is only responsible for dc to ac inversion. As a result, the company says that the inverter is simpler, more cost effective, and more reliable. Fixed string voltage ensures operation at the highest efficiency at all times independent of the string length and temperature.

Features of Single Phase Inverter with HD-Wave Technology

  • Specifically designed to work with SolarEdge power optimizers 3kW to 11.4kW range
  • 99% weighted efficiency (33%-50% less losses than the market standard)
  • Small, lightweight, and easy to install
  • Up to 155% oversizing allowed
  • High reliability due to lower heat dissipation
  • Quick and easy inverter commissioning directly from your smartphone using the SolarEdge SetApp
  • Standard 12-year warranty (extendable to 20 or 25 years)
  • Built-in module-level monitoring
  • Internet communication via Ethernet or wireless connectivity (using optional ZigBee® or Cellular Plug-ins)
  • NEMA 4X - suitable for outdoor and indoor installations
  • Integrated arc fault protection and rapid shutdown for NEC 2014 and 2017, 690.11 and 690.12
  • Optional integrated revenue grade data, ANSI C12.20
  • All inverters are UL1741 SA certified, for CPUC Rule 21 grid compliance

In addition to functioning as a dc-optimized PV inverter, the single-phase inverter also manages battery and system energy as part of the StorEdge solution.

The company says its HD-Wave Technology is based on distributed switching and powerful DSP processing. The inverter can synthesize a clean sine wave that results in a drastic reduction in the magnetics and heavy cooling elements. This reduction translates to an even smaller and lighter inverter for simplified shipping and storing and allows easy one-person installation.

It boasts 99% efficiency, enabling more energy production for an improved ROI.

The company also plans to add a three-phase inverter that can be dc-coupled to one or more 48V batteries for the growing European solar-plus-storage residential market.

Commercial and residential batteries are the third addition to the portfolio. These will be added to the StorEdge. The batteries offer a comprehensive storage solution. SolarEdge batteries are scheduled to be available worldwide in the beginning of 2020 and the company will continue to support StorEdge's compatibility with multiple battery vendors.

"As the evolving solar energy market focuses on increasing self-consumption and grid stabilization, PV-plus-storage solutions are becoming a critical factor in the proliferation of smart solar energy ecosystems," stated Lior Handelsman, SolarEdge's VP of Marketing and Product Strategy, Founder. "By expanding StorEdge and adding batteries to SolarEdge's core offering, we will provide a seamless energy experience for both installers and system owners."

The addition of commercial and residential batteries to its StorEdge offering will let SolarEdge provide an end-to-end, compatible storage solution that can fully synchronize PV, battery, and site-level energy management.

Solar Edge's Li-Ion, high-voltage NMC batteries will provide energy management including site-level and aggregated self-consumption maximization, demand management (peak shaving), both , ancillary services, tariff optimization (ToU). In addition, the batteries will supporting micro-grid applications.

StorEdge compatible, the company simplified the planning, design, installation, service and warranty process for the batteries. The batteries will be either ac or dc coupled with StorEdge. DC coupling allows for superior efficiency and PV oversizing.
