NEC Mobile Energy Releases Manganese Laminate Lithium-Ion Rechargeable Battery

July 30, 2000 by Jeff Shepard

NEC Mobile Energy Corp. (Tokyo, Japan) has begun selling a manganese laminate, lithium-ion, rechargeable, secondary battery. The company aims to meet market needs for the compact design of mobile terminal products such as cellular phones and PDAs.

The batteries use a laminate film for battery packaging instead of conventional aluminum and iron packaging, making the size thinner. While use of the new packaging increased the inner content and optimized electrolytic composition, the battery achieved a higher energy density of 150Wh/kg, a 25 percent increase from the 120Wh/kg typical of traditional batteries. Together with a laminate-film sealing technique with better anti-corrosion properties, the batteries provide thermal stability and they can discharge the same as conventional types. Also, the integrated protection circuit with the battery provides efficiency in system design.

Sample prices $US19 (2,000 yen).
