Motor Driver IC Eval Board for Two-Phase Stepper Motors

July 08, 2019 by Paul Shepard

The TMC2209-EVAL evaluation board from Trinamic allows evaluation of the TMC2209-LA stepper motor driver IC in combination with the TRINAMIC evaluation board system, or as stand-alone-board. It uses the standard schematic and offers several options in order to test different modes of operation.

The TMC2209 from Trinamic is an ultra-silent motor driver IC for two-phase stepper motors. The motor driver's pinning is compatible to a number of legacy drivers as well as to the TMC2208. TMC2209 incorporates the advanced StealthChop2™ chopper that Trinamic says ensures noiseless operation, maximum efficiency, and best motor torque.

Its fast current regulation and optional combination with SpreadCycle™ allow highly dynamic motion while adding StallGuard4™ for sensorless homing.

Applications for the motor driver IC include compatible design upgrades, 3D printers, printers, POS office and home automation, textile, sewing machines, CCTV, security, ATM, cash recycler, HVAC, and battery operated equipment.

The TMC2209-EVAL-KIT is a set of one MCU board Landungsbrücke, one Eselsbrücke bridge board and one TMC2209-EVAL driver board. It allows for a quick and simple start within only minutes to make your motor turning, while still providing full access to all registers and full functionality and diagnostics.

For diagnosis, all signals between MCU and TMC2209 are accessible with probes on the bridge board. TMC2209-EVAL can be used with or without the Landungsbrücke MCU board. Compehensive sample code can be found in Trinamics Technology Access Package TTAP.

Features of the TMC2209-EVAL include:

  • 2-phase stepper motor up to 1.7A coil current (2.4A peak)
  • Supply Voltage 5- to 28-Vdc
  • UART
  • 1 to 256 microsteps
  • Step/Dir interface
  • StealthChop™ silent pwm mode
  • SpreadCycle™ smart mixed decay
