Modine Manufacturing Co. (Racine, WI) plans to develop fuel cells. The company, which has been working for two years on fuel cell heat exchangers for vehicle applications, has formed a Fuel Cell Products Group to bring its heat-transfer expertise to what it calls "an emerging, energy-revolution opportunity."
Fuel cells use a chemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, but in the process produce water and large amounts of heat. Modine says heat exchangers, the core of the company's business, "are a critical, enabling technology for the success of fuel cells and offer a substantial market opportunity for Modine." The company believes that its technology is also applicable to stationary-power fuel cells.
