Microsemi Intros LX5503 Power Amplifier

April 29, 2002 by Jeff Shepard

Microsemi Corp. (Irvine, CA) announced its new LX5503 two-stage, 5GHz to 6GHz WLAN power amplifier, which targets the 5.15GHz to 5.85GHz, medium-gain requirements found in NIC cards, mini PCI cards, and WLAN access points of 802.11a, HiperLAN2 and U-NII applications.

Designed in an advanced InGaP/GaAs HBT RF integrated circuit fabrication process, the LX5503 features a single 3.3V supply, active bias for excellent thermal performance, input/output pre-matching for easy design implementation, plus a space-saving micro-lead package with a footprint only 3mm-sq x 0.9mm. The LX5503 has a low quiescent current of about 100mA and consumes a total current of less than 200mA, while providing a power gain of about 22dB at an orthogonal frequency division multiplex output power level of 18dBm. The temperature variation of gain is less than 2dB over -40 to +85 degrees C.

The LX5503 power amplifier is available for immediate sampling and volume quantities, with pricing below $3 in 10,000-lot quantities. Microsemi will be able to support full customer production needs by the end of June.
