Microchip Technology Unveils PS700 Battery Monitor

September 24, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Microchip Technology Inc. (Chandler, AZ) announced its new PS700 battery monitor, which provides precise battery information to calculate battery capacity. Targeted for hand-held and mobile products, the PS700 supports battery-operated products to extend system run times while providing greater predictability of use.

The device sets expectations of run time, charge time and battery state of health; meanwhile, it accurately monitors and reports current operational conditions and status of the battery for use in system power management. The PS700 operates in four different power modes. The device consumes less than 80µA in run mode and less than 1µA in sleep mode. The PS700 supports one-cell and two-cell lithium batteries and three-cell to six-cell nickel-metal hydride battery packs. Batteries enabled with the PS700, can stop over-charge and over-discharge; predict run time or time to charge; and provide accurate, real-time battery information for use by the system or system user.

Microchip Technology offers a PS7070EV evaluation kit, which includes a PS7070 evaluation board, a PS700 IC, a PS070 PowerMate™ device programmer and a PS051 PowerInfo™2 interface board, and a USB cable and documentation.
