Microchip Bringing Wide Range of Digital Power Solutions to APEC

March 11, 2019 by Scott McMahan

Microchip is participating in the 2019 Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC) on March 17-21, 2019, at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. The company will showcase a variety of efficient and smart power solutions based on its products including products for digital power, motor control, and wireless power. The company invites APEC attendees to please visit them at Booth #211 to meet with their experts and discuss how Microchip can enhance designs.

Microchip notes, that using traditional methods to add the necessary intelligence to cost-sensitive analog designs has been a challenge. For this reason, the company says that digitally controlled power supplies have proved to be an optimal solution for numerous power delivery applications, giving designers greater flexibility, higher efficiency, and longer system life than fully analog supplies.

This demo will show how Microchip's hybrid power microcontrollers (MCUs) offer a flexible solution for a wide range of applications.

Specifically, the company will demo the CIP Hybrid Power Starter Kit, a hardware platform designed to show the flexibility of Microchip's CIP Hybrid Power microcontroller as used in an SMPS application. The board incorporates the PIC16F1779 as the freely programmable PMIC device of a synchronous buck converter. The Synchronous Buck Converter on the board accepts input voltages ranging from 6V to 16V and delivers an output voltage of 3.3V with a maximum load current of 8A. The output of the power supply is rated for maximum 25W.

dsPIC® DSC Digital Power Solutions

dsPIC33 Digital Signal Controllers (DSCs) provide the performance of a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) with the simplicity of a microcontroller (MCU). Microchip designed the dsPIC DSC core to execute digital filter algorithms and high-speed precision digital control loops. The company offers a variety of development boards and reference designs that show the breadth of capabilities that our dsPIC DSCs solutions offer.

dsPIC DSC Motor Control Solutions

dsPIC33 Digital Signal Controllers (DSCs) enable the design of quieter and more efficient high-performance, precision motor control systems that also have a great range and extended life. The demo will showcase how dsPIC33 DSCs can be used to control brushless dc, permanent magnet synchronous, ac induction and stepper motors.

dsPIC DSC Wireless Power/Charging Solutions

Microchips will demonstrate the dsPIC33 Digital Signal Controllers (DSCs), which include a powerful Digital Signal Processor (DSP) core, high-speed Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs) and high-resolution PWMs, provide a high level of programmability and enable standards-based and proprietary wireless charging solutions. The dsPIC33 DSC-based 15W transmitter complies with the Qi™ standard and supports CAN, NFC and Authentication.

The wireless power charging solutions target applications such as power tools and industrial robots. The 200W Transmitter/Receiver solution, which is based on a proprietary protocol, provides greater than 90% efficiency and includes an advanced Foreign Object Detection scheme.

30kW Three-Phase Vienna PFC Reference Design

Another Microchip demo will show the company's 30kW three-phase Vienna PFC reference design to help designers kickstart their silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductor designs using the company's next-generation SiC Schottky Barrier Diodes (SBDs) and SiC MOSFETs. Microchip's new, scalable 30kW, three-phase Vienna Power Factor Correction (PFC) topology reference design is well suited for fast EV charging and other high-power automotive and industrial applications.

Discrete and Module Packaging Examples

The company will also demonstrate how SiC semiconductors can improve system efficiency for smaller form factor and higher operating temperature applications in the industrial, automotive, medical, aerospace, defense and communication markets.

Along with the demonstration, the company will show off its selection SiC discrete and module solutions in a range of standard or custom packages for high-power applications.

USB Charging

With one demo, the company intends to show the hardware and capability tradeoffs between different implementations of USB charging hardware. This demo includes USB Type-C™ dual-charging ports based on a resistive divider method with legacy support, a single USB Type A charging port with quick charging support, a combination of two USB Type-C and two USB Type A ports based on the resistive divider and legacy protocols, and a USB power delivery charging port.

MPLAB® Mindi™ Analog Simulator

A demo will reveal how MPLAB® Mindi™ Analog Simulator can simulate analog circuits using standard or Microchip-proprietary component models prior to hardware prototyping to reduce design time and design risk. The simulation tool uses a SIMetrix/SIMPLIS simulation environment, with options to employ SPICE or piecewise linear modeling, that can cover an extensive set of possible simulation needs.

LDO with Ripple Blocker™ Technology

The company will demo the MIC943x5 Low Dropout Regulator (LDO) with Ripple Blocker technology. For noise-sensitive applications, it maintains high Power Supply Ripple Rejection (PSRR) with input voltages operating near the output voltage level to improve overall system efficiency.

GaNdalf PFC Reference Design Board

The final demo will be of a GaNdalf high-efficiency gallium-nitride (GaN)-based, fully digitally controlled Totempole Bridgeless Power Factor Correction (PFC) reference design from Future Electronics. The reference design features a dsPIC33CH dual-core digital signal controller and two Panasonic X-GaN HEMT power transistors to target high-efficiency, high-power density ac-dc power supplies for industrial DIN-rail mount units, platinum- and titanium-rated desktop PCs, and small office servers for up to 1kW.
