Micrel Intros MIC5245 CMOS LDO Regulator

July 18, 1999 by Jeff Shepard

Micrel Semiconductor (San Jose, CA) introduced the new MIC5245, a CMOS low-noise low-dropout (LDO) regulator. The new device is a 150mA regulator in the IttyBitty SOT-23-5 package. The MIC5245 is claimed to combine exceptional low noise performance (30uVrms) with excellent dropout voltage (150mV at 150mA).

The MIC5245's output contains a p-channel and n-channel MOSFET totem pole configuration which is claimed to decrease recovery time during heavy load conditions, substantially improving the output response to changes in load. The low quiescent current (87uA at full load) helps prolong battery usage, according to Micrel. In addition, the regulator's PSRR performance can be enhanced with the use of ceramic output capacitors to provide a clean and stable output voltage. The MIC5245 is aimed at the battery-operated market where small package, low noise and low power operation are critical. It is trimmed to one percent initial tolerance, and protected with current limit and thermal shutdown. When purchased in quantities of 1,000, prices for the MIC5245 start at $0.56.
