Micrel Intros MIC2193/94/96/98/99 DC Controllers

July 15, 2003 by Jeff Shepard

Micrel Semiconductor Inc. (San Jose, CA), a leader in power management and high-speed communications integrated circuits, released a family of five new high-efficiency, dc/dc controllers housed in small, low pin-count packages, the MIC2198, MIC2199, MIC2193, MIC2194 and MIC2196.

The MIC2198/9 are suitable for powering the chipsets in point-of-load, dc/dc architectures. The low output-voltage capability of down to 0.8V, along with high current capability of 20A, powers CPUs, DSPs and FPGAs with up to 95% efficiency. Housed in the 4mm x 4mm, MLFTM, 12-lead package, which is 46% smaller than the commonly used SO-8 package, the ICs save valuable board area. The 500KHz operating frequency of the MIC2198 further saves board space by allowing the use of small external inductors and capacitors.

The MIC2198 and MIC2199 operate over a wide 4.5V to 32V input-voltage range, making them suitable for 5V, 12V and 24V power bus systems. The MIC2199 operates at a slower 300KHz, allowing higher efficiency in high input-voltage systems by reducing switching losses.

The MIC2198 and MIC2199 are available in the 4mm x 4mm, MLFTM, 12-lead package and are priced at $1.99 in 1,000-piece quantities. The MIC2193BM, MIC2194BM and MIC2196BM are available in the SO-8 package and are priced at $1.97 in 1,000-piece quantities. Samples are available from stock, and production quantities are from stock to 12 weeks ARO.
